StatoilHydro came into being on 1 October 2007, in a merger that combined Statoil and Hydro's oil and energy business. While 2007 went down in history as a landmark year for the new company, 2008 will be remembered as the year the real merger began. Statoil and Hydro employees put considerable effort into making the merger a success through the integration planning process.

Statoil and Hydro had achieved a great deal as separate companies. Now, by combining the best of both, StatoilHydro has the expertise, technology and capacity to pursue exciting business opportunities on the Norwegian continental shelf and abroad.
