The Norwegian government has laid down strict procedures for the removal and disposal of offshore oil and gas installations under the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Northeast Atlantic, known as the OSPAR Convention.

However, there has been no decommissioning of StatoilHydro-operated fields during the last three years. On partner-operated fields, there has been removal activity on Frigg and Ekofisk.
