* Lease sales conducted by the Minerals Management Service, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, a government agency, require the highest bidder to pay a one-time lease bonus when they are subsequently awarded the lease. This usually gives us the right to explore on that block for 10 years and the payment is recorded as a signature bonus. If we don't have any exploration efforts during a particular year, we pay an annual delay rental recorded as exploration expense.
(1) Includes the Faroes and Greenland
(2) Social investments figure in Norway does not include investments made by partner operated fields.
(3) Historical data adjusted to reflect revised methodology and definition. Using an adapted version of the social investment definition of the London Benchmarking Group. Social investments reported here include voluntary contributions - that is, charitable donations, community investments, other social investments (not specifically targeted at communities within the direct area of impact), and management costs - and contractual contributions.
(4) Indirect taxes relate to government revenue derived from our operations, and include carbon tax, area fees, royalty, petrol duty and the like (excluding value-added tax).
(5) Income taxes paid for fiscal 2008, but also taxes for earlier fiscal years paid in 2008. We do not pay income tax in a number of countries because we have no production or other income-generating activities there. Lead times in the oil and gas industry (the period from discovery until production begins) can be long. This means that we invest substantial sums for a number of years before generating any taxable income.
(6) The host government share of production after oil production has been allocated to cover costs and expenses under a PSA.
(7) The voluntary or contractual contribution made by the company either to assist a community meet its development priorities (for example education, health, income generation) or examine ways in which it can enhance existing opportunities such as local content development and the building of long term skills to enable communities to participate in local and regional development.
(8) A one time payment made to the government of host country once awarded a licence.

** IS Partner is an information systems service provider that was sold to an external party in February 2008. The employees are primarily situated in Norway.
(9) Includes pension and payroll taxes.
(10) Based on company location (the country in which the company with employees is registered). Actual number of employees present in the country is therefore likely to be different; lower than stated for Norway since more employees are expatriated from Norway, and a higher number of employees in most other locations. In some countries, for instance China, we are prohibited from employing local personnel on permanent contracts. This table only includes permanent employees, and not temporary employees or apprentices.
