Oil spill in Fagerstrand, Norway
On 10 September 2008 approximately 14,300 litres of base oil were accidentally discharged to the ground and the sea at the lubricant plant in Fagerstrand, on the banks of the Oslo fjord.
The leakage of base oil (NexBase 3060) started in the morning during pumping from a tank truck to a tank, and it was discovered in the afternoon. By then the soil around and near the tank was contaminated with base oil and there was a blue film on the water area outside the plant. By using a recovery vehicle, retaining and absorbing booms and an oil skimmer, approximately 9,600 litres of oil were collected. The rest of the oil was outside the booms and not possible to collect.
A few days after the spillage, an assessment was carried out of the impact on wildlife in the area. No injured birds were found, or damage to other wildlife.
Products such as Nexbase 3060 are not considered to represent a long-term risk to the aquatic environment. It is therefore unlikely that the spillage at Fagerstrand will have any long-term effects.
