Research into oil spill response

R&D programmes to strengthen oil spill response

In 2008, we established an overall strategy for oil spill preparedness and response in relation to our operations on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).

In this region, the main focus for the coming years is on being properly prepared for exploration and production in the north of Norway, including the development of the Goliat field.  As part of our preparations, we need to fill in the gaps in our knowledge about oil spill response in connection with the revision of the Management plan in 2010. A reliable oil spill response organisation and good cooperation with local players are pre-conditions for opening up for activities in northern areas such as Lofoten and Vesterålen.

We have continued to pursue an extensive portfolio of R&D projects for the tailoring of such response jointly with other oil companies:

  • Norwegian R&D portfolio targeting the NCS jointly through the Norwegian Clean Sea Association for Operating Company (NOFO)
  • Norwegian R&D portfolio jointly with Eni Norge targeting the far north
  • International R&D portfolio targeting Arctic areas with ice-infested waters.

The R&D portfolios support our ambition to be able to operate in a safe and sustainable manner in the Arctic.
