The Canadian media company announced its ranking on Wednesday evening, 25 January. The 100 companies on the list represent 22 countries and have been selected from a shortlist of 4000 companies.

Chair of Statoil’s board, Svein Rennemo, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“The award is a recognition of Statoil’s work to operate a sustainable enterprise. The board and management are working to ensure continued progress in this field, and this award is an inspiration which supports our belief that sustainability is one Statoil’s competitive strengths,” says Rennemo.

The Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk A/S was ranked first, closely followed by Brazilian company Natura Cosmeticos SA. This makes Statoil ASA the world’s most sustainable company in the oil and gas industry.

Corporate Knights have prepared annual sustainability rankings since 2005. The objective is to highlight the global corporations that are the most active in environment, management-related and social issues.
