Mongstad thermal power plant
DONG Energy and Statoil are cooperating at Mongstad to construct a thermal power plant which will be completely integrated with Statoil’s refinery. DONG Energy will construct, operate and own the power plant. In addition, a gas pipeline from Kollsnes to Mongstad has been built, and the necessary couplings and modifications have been carried out on the refinery.
The thermal power plant will supply Mongstad with electricity and heat, and will, as agreed with the owners of the Troll licence, also supply the Troll A platform and gas treatment facility on Kollsnes with electricity.
The main idea behind the Mongstad Power Plant is to strengthen and maintain the Mongstad refinery’s position as a cost efficient supplier of refined petroleum products, as well as further develop a robust and long-term competitive position for Mongstad as an industrial site.
The utilisation of the thermal power plant’s capacity will, to a great extent, be governed by the refinery’s energy needs and possibly new facilities adjacent to the refinery. The thermal power plant is built for the future, which means that the capacity at the plant will not be fully used during the first years of operation.
At full utilisation of the capacity, the thermal power plant will have an effect (production of useable energy per fired amount of natural gas) of between 70 and 80 per cent – depending on the degree to which the heating production capacity is utilised.
At maximum utilisation, the thermal power plant can deliver 280 megawatts (MW) of electricity and about 350 MW of heat.
The thermal power plant will be completed in 2010.
