Although this fuel is less polluting than either oil or coal, emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particles and certain other components are nevertheless substantial.

Such emissions are subject to increasingly stringent restrictions, and all Statoil’s new facilities are built with the best available technology.

The group is currently giving top priority to technologies for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions and methods for calculating its contribution to regional impacts, such as acidification and over-fertilisation.

Studies are also seeking to establish whether particles and polycyclical aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) make a noticeable contribution to local pollution.
