Group scientists involved with methanol participate in maintenance turnarounds at the plant and provide advice on operating it.

Technological monitoring and a high level of expertise in this area have made it possible to recommend technical solutions not found in other methanol plants around the world.

The Statoil research centre at Rotvoll in Trondheim played a key role in selecting the technology utilised at Tjeldbergodden. This helped to create one of the world’s most energy-efficient methanol producers.

In addition, the research centre participates in studies and technical assessments relating to new and increased capacity at the plant.

Synthesis gas is an intermediate product used in both methanol and gas-to-liquid production, as well as being a key element in the production of hydrogen.
 
The research centre pursues activities in all these areas of study.

Synthesis gas can also be produced from gasification of biological substances and other hydrocarbon resources, such as coal.
