Geothermal energy is heat naturally present everywhere. The energy is released from the core of the earth, and the heat is continuously generated by the decay of radioactive isotopes in the crust and in the mantel, a highly viscous layer directly under the crust.

Geothermal energy is renewable and environmentally friendly, and has many advantages, such as a high degree of availability and low emissions. As the technology harnesses energy deep from the Earth’s core, its strength is that it is a renewable energy technology independent of intermittent energy sources, such as solar or wind.

Our aim is to build upon our oil and gas core expertise, such as geology, drilling and reservoir management, to realise the potential of geothermal power.
Statoil is focusing on both conventional and engineered geothermal development, and next generation technologies may provide a game-changing energy option for electricity production
