Say HI to change. Say HI to Equinor.

Today we announce that we propose to change the name of our company from Statoil to Equinor.

Change is natural, it’s part of all of us. Even a big company like Statoil changes. We were born in 1972 and like everyone else – we have changed a lot since then. We have tried, failed, learned and tried again for 46 years. Always searching for a better version of ourselves. And now it’s time to change one more thing. Our name.

It’s a natural change as we develop from a focused oil and gas to a broad energy company. Statoil has for almost 50 years served us well as a great name, we are now preparing for the next 50 and beyond.

So why Equinor?

We have searched for a name that effectively captures our heritage and values, and at the same time, gives a clear direction for the future. “Equi” is the starting point for words like equal, equality and equilibrium. “Nor” is signalling a company proud of its origin. We believe the name says something important about us as a company: What we stand for, where we come from and how we see the future.

The name reflects how we see people, how we view the future of energy and our heritage.

Say HI to change. Say HI to Equinor.
