That’s why we’ve stepped up our collaboration with General Electric (GE) to accelerate the development of more environmentally and economically sustainable solutions to fuel the future.

We are also calling on great thinkers from outside of our organisations to join our collaboration through a series of Open Innovation Challenges.

Looking for short and long term solutions 

This joint technology-focused programme is aimed at driving an industrial response to some of the biggest challenges facing global oil and gas production, including CO2 and methane emissions and water usage.

Through Powering Collaboration, Statoil and GE are working together to develop and utilise technologies that will make an impact today, as well as to develop solutions that will make a difference for the industry in the longer term.  As such, our portfolio includes a diverse range of concrete projects aimed at optimising operations and applying existing solutions in innovative ways. In addition we are working together to develop new technologies. 

Demonstrating collaboration in key areas

So far, Powering Collaboration has focused on establishing and developing projects aimed at reducing COand methane emissions from oil and gas production, in addition to improving water management.

Cutting CO2 emissions

We are developing smarter and leaner solutions aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving power generation. These solutions include targeting optimisation of gas compressors, turbines and exhaust systems. In addition, we are continuously seeking solutions to achieve step changes. Thus, we are investing in a number of opportunities requiring longer maturation, including technologies to enable the recovery of energy from exhaust heat. 

One example of this is our efforts to increasing fuel efficiency by applying turbine online water wash technology. 70—85% of turbine performance loss is due to salt and other deposit build-ups.  

Reducing methane emissions  

Statoil and GE are working together to find solutions to reduce methane emissions in onshore operations as part of a holistic roadmap. This includes reducing emissions at their source and monitoring progress, while investigating longer term solutions to drive continuous improvement.    

Improving water management

We are working to improve water management in onshore operations, through concrete measures to reduce the use of water and improve treatment. This includes testing the use of liquefied CO2 stimulation to both reduce water usage in shale stimulation and increase production and investigating a new water treatment technology that uses oilfield wastes to sustainably treat water and produce electricity and capture CO2

Innovate with us

In the spirit of this collaboration, GE and Statoil have launched a series of open innovation challenges. Knowing that great ideas can be conceptualised outside our own companies, the open innovation challenges invite innovators from around the world and beyond the oil and gas industry to share their solutions to help make energy production more sustainable.

Sand Challenge 

The first Open Innovation Challenge sought solutions to address the use of sand in onshore operations. Focusing on sand as a proppant—which requires thousands of truck trips to transport it to the site when drilling new wells—can potentially reduce emissions and environmental impacts on local communities while making energy production more efficient.

After evaluating a promising range of proposals from a diverse set of innovators, we identified five winners.

Water challenge 

The second open innovation challenge was aimed at  finding solutions for reducing fresh water usage and improving water treatment in the development of onshore unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. A team of experts is now evaluating a large number of proposals for reducing fresh water usage and improving treatment and reuse in development activities. You can find out more about the winning entries here.
