New office in Germany

June 15, 2023: We celebrated Global Wind Day by strengthening our presence in Germany and opening an office in the offshore wind capital Hamburg.

Norway and Germany have a long energy partnership and Equinor’s ambition is to be a trusted and reliable energy and decarbonisation partner for Europe and Germany.

We’re proud to provide a broad energy offering to support Germany’s Energiewende: green power from offshore wind at an industrial scale, a growing number of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen projects, reliable natural gas from Norway, and carbon capture, transport & offshore storage projects.

What connects Germany and Norway?

Winter sports, love of nature and three natural gas pipelines.

Equinor opened its first German office in Düsseldorf in 1984. Then, as now, the focus was on reliable gas deliveries. Equinor Deutschland GmbH later moved to East Frisia - first to Emden and then to Etzel, where Equinor operates a natural gas storage facility through its subsidiary Equinor Deutschland Storage GmbH. In addition to the gas business, Equinor is also present in the offshore wind sector in Germany. Together with the operator E.ON, the company invested in the Arkona offshore wind farm, which is 35 kilometers off Rügen in the Baltic Sea. The 385 MW big park was opened in 2019. Equinor has had an office in Berlin since 2014 that is responsible for government and parliamentary contacts.

Offshore wind

Equinor is interested in developing a position in the attractive German offshore wind market. We welcome the increased target for offshore wind set by the German government.

We have a long energy history in Germany and view the upcoming offshore wind opportunities with great interest.

Together with RWE, we have presented a plan to replace German coal-fired power plants with gas-fired, hydrogen-ready power plants. The plan also describes how Norwegian low-carbon hydrogen and renewable hydrogen can be exported to Germany by pipeline. The collaboration aims to provide for the joint development of offshore wind farms to produce renewable hydrogen as a feedstock for power customers and other industrial customers in the future.

We have entered a partnership with EnBW for the upcoming OW tender this summer. Together we combine excellent capability in delivering renewables projects specifically in Germany with international offshore experience, all needed to provide sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy

Arkona wind farm

We are a partner (25%) in the Arkona offshore windfarm in Germany, a 385 MW wind farm located in the Baltic Sea approximately 22 miles from the German coastline. The windfarm has a total of 60 turbines and delivers energy to ~400.000 households annually. The wind farm started production in 2019.

AquaSector

Equinor is partner in the AquaSector project pursuing a vision of a first large-scale hydrogen park offshore Germany.

The project aims to demonstrate that in Germany offshore based hydrogen production enables an efficient, cost-effective and sustainable way to produce green hydrogen.
